We are proud to announce we now operate an accredited geriatric emergency room/department. As an Accredited Geriatric Emergency Department (GEDA), our protocol-driven approach to geriatric care allows us to provide superior, tailored care. Seniors who visit our emergency department can be assured that our facility has the necessary expertise, equipment, and personnel in place to provide optimal care. We are excited that our
dedication to this population has been recognized and are proud to say we are the only accredited geriatric emergency department for more than 10 miles!
This accreditation is granted by the American
College of Emergency Physicians, an organization which represents more than 38,000 emergency physicians, residents, and medical students. The goal for an accredited emergency department is to improve care for older adults visiting the emergency room, and being accredited means we:
• Provided specific geriatric-centered training for physicians and nurses.
• Enacted special care processes tailored to seniors.
• Created specific policies for treating older patients.
• Provide access to mobility aids, large-print documents, large-face clocks, and other items to make seniors feel more comfortable.
“We are always looking at ways to provide better service to our patients and community,” said Ruben Garza, CEO of Dallas Medical Center. “We wanted to go through the process of gaining this accreditation because the next closest GEDA is more than 10 miles away, and we didn’t want our senior citizens and their families to be burdened by long travel times.”
