Patient safety is a top priority for Corridor-based Dallas Medical Center (DMC), who was recently recognized for its outstanding work when it received the 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades. This puts DMC in the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for patient safety!

Additionally, DMC was a five-star recipient for the following procedures/conditions in 2019: appendectomy, treatment of sepsis, treatment of GI bleed and hysterectomy.

“We are honored to have received the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award!” said Ruben Garza, CEO of DMC. “Patient safety is our top priority, and we all work very hard to make sure our patients receive the best care possible. At Dallas Medical Center, we set the bar high, and this award lets us know we’re meeting and exceeding our goals. I’d like to thank all of our staff and medical provider, because without them, our hospital would not be what it is today.”

Healthgrades is one of the most recognized review organizations in the healthcare field. They work to provide trusted information that helps consumers and providers make meaningful connections. A five-star rating from Healthgrades indicates that a hospital’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition of performing the procedure being evaluated.

During the study period from 2015 to 2017, the Healthgrades 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospitals demonstrated excellent performance in safety provided for patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective outcomes for 14 patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), according to a recent press release.

Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award were on average:

  • 9 percent less likely to experience an accidental cut, puncture, perforation or hemorrhage during medical care,
  • 9 percent less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest,
  • 4 percent less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, and
  • 57 percent less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired at the hospital.

If all hospitals in the country performed at the level of DMC and other Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients, then 127,667 patient safety events could have been avoided.

“We are proud to recognize the recipients of the 2019 Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award, which shines a spotlight on the hospitals that are preventing the occurrence of serious, potentially avoidable complications for patients during their hospital stay,” stated Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Healthgrades. “We applaud these hospitals and their commitment to providing the best possible care for every patient.”

Dallas Medical Center is a full-service acute care hospital. Its main campus includes a 155-bed hospital and four medical plazas and offers medical and surgical in-patient stays, outpatient surgery, 24-hour emergency care, diagnostic radiology and laboratory, internal medicine and family practice.

Congratulations to DMC for winning this prestigious award!
